Android is known to be and is famous for being one of the next biggest platforms that will be able to steal the spotlight away from the iPhone. This, however, does not seem to be true given the current situation for Android. The biggest problem is that the platform is currently facing a big number of versions of software on different phones. With many different versions and releases available for the Android platform, many of the apps that are made are not compatible with the operating system giving the average android app developer a problem.

Consider, as well, the numerous vendors who are providing different phones with numerous variations of hardware components which means that majority of developers have very difficult times developing codes for each individual phone instead of having the luxury of having a single universal app. The problem here lies in within the fact that cross-platform independence, regardless of the hardware, is the ideal notion that developers all dream about but can never get. Just like the situation with BlackBerry wherein porting apps from one platform to another poses a challenge because, while it is possible, it will not be an easy task. From the perspective of the small time freelance developer, Android is a rather difficult platform to work with.

The amount of resources and time that is necessary to code for a single application is very important to many small businesses. The need to change the code in order to work with other hardware and different versions of software is not conducive to building a large customer base. Not only do the variations in hardware and software have an effect on the overall compatibility of an app, it will also have an effect on the build quality of each app made and recoded. As a result of this constant need to reconfigure their apps, customers have become naturally wary of the platform when they experience bad quality with their apps whenever they are using them.

This leads to an android app developer having to find a quick solution in the form of patches to find ways to go about these problems which is rather dangerous and a very poor practice in programming. Google must find a way to address this issue very carefully. There are several underpowered phones that are using Android version 1.5 as well as powerful, high-end phones that use the latest version available. The inability of versions to run with backward or forward compatibility means that the apps available on either version will only run on versions that are exactly the same as theirs.

What the iPhone did to counter this is was to launch new phones along with the mandatory use of the iTunes interface to make sure that the phone’s software stayed up-to-date. While it may seem a bit controlling and very draconian, Apple has found a winning formula because they have found a means to control the entire experience and usability of using an iPhone. Apple is capable of damage control whenever software or any malicious threats or viruses arrive. But the thing of it is, most people switch to android to avoid Apples draconian methods and lack of compatibility with many other programs. Those who meet an Android app developer will know how much more satisfying it is to not be answerable to Apple as they are given much more freedom to develop whatever kinds of programs and apps he likes and this results in many more apps available for those running on Android.

This gives an Android app developer a giant advantage over those who are making apps for the iPhone. The problem is, sometimes this freedom is abused and several malicious programs and viruses are made and spread around. This is easily solved by getting an anti-virus. The next logical step to take is to start using emulators to ensure that all apps can run across all platforms and hardware, but, the very nature of an emulator is to provide something very much like the real thing. The cost of using an emulator, however, is that it will never be able to truly reflect how apps interact with the phones hardware and software. Google must find a way to provide some means of standardizing the software available on all hardware or provide some sort of interface that would at least be able to help an android app developer to diagnose their problems with their android compatible phones.

The logical assumption would be using a web-based interface that lets users download from a central location the same way iTunes does it. The Marketplace on Android to can become this, but, it would need serious overhauls in its design and must be integrated with all hardware. With the new technology that Google has just acquired, it would make sense that the marketplace will most likely receive a revamp that will transform it into an interface for phones to be kept up-to-date through Google.

The latest version of the Android operating system is Android 3.0, code-named Honeycomb. What sets Honeycomb apart from earlier versions of the OS is that it is specifically optimize for larger screen devices, in particular tablets. One of the first Android tablets to run Honeycomb is the Motorola Xoom. With the inclusion of Honeycomb in their device, Motorola now delivers one of the most sought after tablets for sale on the market today.

But what is it about the new OS that makes it so appealing?

First, the UI of the operating system is completely redesigned. One of the best new UI features is the widget. Unlike the previous OS, multiple and larger widgets appear on the screen. Another new feature of the operating system is the System Bar located at the bottom of the screen. Another point worth mentioning is when the tablet shifts to portrait mode, the System Bar adjusts as well.

Next is the Action Bar, which displays at the top of the screen. When working with an application, users always have access to the Action Bar. Because the Action Bar is dependent upon the app running at the time, the information that it displays is based on the application currently in view, not the system.

An old feature that has seen some improvement is the App Launcher. Even though it is activated in the same manner as the older OS version, Honeycomb now shows five screen panels taking up the top half of the screen, with the lower half showing tabs for each screen category. Pressing a tab allows you to view all the possible options of that category without having to leave the screen, which gives you the ability to quickly scroll back and forth.

In short, the numerous advancements of the new Android operating system make navigating and interacting with Android tablets easier. If other device manufacturers make use of the OS as smoothly as the Motorola Xoom, the new OS will continue to help grow the market of Android enabled devices. Even though the Xoom is one of the few tablets for sale that incorporate the new operating system, the features that the OS brings to the table is sure to have tablet manufacturers rushing to upgrade their OS.

Why is the Facebook Android robot blue? Let’s start from the beginning…

The promise was plain and simple. Android was supposed to be the mobile OS of the people. Google was supposed to churn out the software and the hardware manufacturers were free to use it, and free to forget about paying royalties to the evil, open-source hating mobile OS developers. But now that Android licensees are being forced by Google to abide by “non-fragmentation clauses” – the open-source spirit is gone. Sort of.

According to this Bloomberg Businessweek article, Google wants to have the final say over the modifications the licensees introduce to Android (such as new interfaces or new services).  And it all makes perfect sense. The “non-fragmentation clauses” are exactly what it says on the tin. Android is Google’s project, so no wonder Google wants to be able to control where it’s heading. Especially that the clauses have always been a part of the Android license agreement. Google is just trying to mete out the justice. Clean up the mess on the “fragmented” Android device market. If some spoiled android device makers don’t like that – maybe they should look back at the times when they did have to pay software royalties.

That’s all well and good. After all, today Android is the industry leader with 31% world market share in its green pocket. Being a bit more strict about standards won’t hurt. Google says that tighter control means higher quality across a wider spectrum of devices and quicker bug fixing. It also helps achieving the “common denominator” experience. So why does something smell fishy?

Well, the fishy part is timing. It so happens that one of the companies working on their own version of Android is facebook. So Google would get to review the changes facebook introduces to Android, and according to the mysterious “two people who refuse to be named but are nevertheless quoted by Bloomberg Businessweek”, facebook execs are not happy about that. At the same time it so happens that, with the introduction of the +1 button feature, facebook has just become a much more direct competition for Google. The companies have stood in each other’s way for some time now – with Google boldly venturing into the social networking world (Buzz) and Facebook nibbling away at Google’s advertising profit.

So, is Google tightening up its Android policies because it is concerned about quality? Or is it because the prospect of limiting the influence of its competitor is just irresistible? Google has been longing for a piece of the social networking pie for a long time. It didn’t quite get there with Buzz, so is it now playing dirty to make sure the second attempt hits home?

The answer is disappointedly ambiguous: YES and NO. Both.

YES, because that’s not the first time Google’s using Android to annoy facebook. Remember the contact sharing incident, when Google decided to revoke facebook’s sync privileges?

And at the same time NO, because YES would be a gross oversimplification. Google’s motives seem fair enough (well, Microsoft may beg to differ, with Google’s decision effectively holding back Bing powered Verizon handsets). And we should simply come to terms with the notion that big companies are not always nice to each other. Google is not being spiteful. The company is simply using its strengths to its advantage. And if you don’t “like it”, “+1” it.

Remember the Sony Android tablets that were leaked a couple of months ago? Well, we might be seeing one of those products (or some other Sony Android tablet) on retail shelves in a few months. According to some reports online, Sony Corp’s CEO, Howard Stringer has been reported as saying Sony plans to release a tablet computer by the end of summer.
